During each session you will receive tuition and guidance on a range of archival research skills from our medieval records specialists\, and you will also undertake practical exercises involving hands-on document work.  \nThe first day of the workshop will focus on the vast collection of medieval legal records held by The National Archives (c.1215-c.1509). The day will begin with an introduction to the English legal system in the Middle Ages and beyond and its processes\, including an introduction to the languages and skills needed to navigate legal records\, as well as an overview of officials active in the courts. The following sessions will focus on different areas of medieval law including: common law (King’s Bench and the court of Common Pleas); the rise of equity courts; and the local administration of justice. These sessions will include practical activities designed to guide students in locating and using original cases within TNA’s collections\, as well as using material from lesser-used document series to supplement findings and provide dates for undated Chancery petitions. \nThe second day of the workshop will trace the changes in the legal systems and records held by The National Archives from the early modern period (c.1509-c.1782). The day will begin with an introduction to the early modern legal system\, providing a summary of the material covered on day one\, as well as covering the key changes taking place in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The following sessions will focus on the different types of court available to litigants during this period\, from the common law courts of Westminster\, to courts and commissions held outside of London\, as well as the conciliar courts of Star Chamber\, Requests\, and Chancery. In the final session of the day\, our records specialists will demonstrate how to trace a single case across several record series using the skills introduced over the day. \nAt the end of the workshop you will have increased confidence in your ability to find and access previously challenging medieval and early modern legal documents\, and to read and understand their contents. This event is aimed at current taught postgraduate and PhD students\, although other researchers are welcome to attend. This is a level three workshop within the PAST programme\, and will be investigating complex and demanding archival collections\, but you will be supported by expert staff throughout. There are no pre-requisites for attendance\, although a basic understanding of Latin is recommended. \nThis is a two-day workshop on site at The National Archives. Our latest legal survey from February 2020 shows this figure has almost halved and now stands at just 32%. \nThe situation is worse still for those held in prisons under immigration powers\, as there is no provision of immigration legal advice in prisons. Just 20.8% of people we spoke to who had been detained in prison before transferring to a detention centre had received any immigration advice while in prison. \nWhy BID? \nLast year BID supported 5\,941 people to fight for their freedom. This included 167 parents separated from their 322 children and thousands of vulnerable adults including those with severe mental and physical health conditions and victims of torture\, trafficking and sexual violence. \nBID is a very small charity with no legal aid contract nor government funding. A violent campaign by extreme religious settlers has been waged against Palestinian farmers in one of the most fertile agricultural areas of the West Bank\, the Baka Valley\, which is steadily being encroached upon by large suburbs of the settlement of Kiryat Arba\, in Hebron. The Jaber family has experienced multiple house demolitions\, and their wells and irrigation systems have been destroyed many times by settlers just before harvest. The family has experienced other forms of settler violence\, yet they are determined to remain on the land that has been in their family for generations. \nSuhad Bishara\, senior lawyer with Adalah\, Legal Centre for Minority Rights in Israel\, where she has worked since 2001. She previously served as a legal consultant to the Association of Forty\, the Arab Steering Committee for Urban Planning in the Galilee Society\, and the Hotline for Battered Women. Suhad was the first Palestine & Law Fellow at Columbia University Law School (2014-2015) and she is currently pursuing a PhD at Kings College London. Adalah has ECOSOC status at the United Nations where it regularly submits oral and written reports including to the Human Rights Council. \nJeff Halper is the co-founder and director of ICAHD\, the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions and a Professor of Anthropology. He was born in 1946 in Minnesota and emigrated to Israel in 1973. Halper taught at Haifa and Ben Gurion Universities in Israel\, and was the head of Friends World College\, an international university programme in the States. He has been a tireless advocate for justice and civil rights for all Israelis and Palestinians. He spent ten years as a community worker in Jerusalem aiding low-income Mizrahi families. He co-founded ICAHD in 1997 to help resist Israel’s strategy of house demolitions in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. He is the author of four books\, Between Redemption and Revival: The Jewish Yishuv in Jerusalem in the Nineteenth Century\, An Israeli in Palestine: Resisting Possession\, Redeeming Israel\, Obstacles to Peace: A Reframing of the Palestinian – Israeli Conflict and War Against the People: Israel\, the Palestinians and Global Pacification. In 2006 Dr. Halper was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize\, citing ICAHD’s work “to liberate both the Palestinian and the Israeli people from the yoke of structural violence” and “to build equality between their people by recognizing and celebrating their common humanity.” Jeff is co-founder of the One Democratic State Campaign.
