ICAHD UK invites you to attend its annual conference to hear Atta Jaber relate how demolitions of his home and settler violence have impacted on his family.  \nIn the conference we will explain the legal status of demolitions and what is being done in the Israeli courts and at the United Nations to challenge Israel’s demolition policy in both the occupied territory and in Israel.  \nLiving under Israel’s brutal military occupation and apartheid policies has resulted on ongoing trauma Learn about how demolitions affect the members of Palestinian families in different ways and impact the wider community. A violent campaign by extreme religious settlers has been waged against Palestinian farmers in one of the most fertile agricultural areas of the West Bank\, the Baka Valley\, which is steadily being encroached upon by large suburbs of the settlement of Kiryat Arba\, in Hebron. The Jaber family has experienced multiple house demolitions\, and their wells and irrigation systems have been destroyed many times by settlers just before harvest. The family has experienced other forms of settler violence\, yet they are determined to remain on the land that has been in their family for generations. \nSuhad Bishara\, senior lawyer with Adalah\, Legal Centre for Minority Rights in Israel\, where she has worked since 2001. She previously served as a legal consultant to the Association of Forty\, the Arab Steering Committee for Urban Planning in the Galilee Society\, and the Hotline for Battered Women. Suhad was the first Palestine & Law Fellow at Columbia University Law School (2014-2015) and she is currently pursuing a PhD at Kings College London. Adalah has ECOSOC status at the United Nations where it regularly submits oral and written reports including to the Human Rights Council.  \nJeff Halper is the co-founder and director of ICAHD\, the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions and a Professor of Anthropology. He was born in 1946 in Minnesota and emigrated to Israel in 1973. Halper taught at Haifa and Ben Gurion Universities in Israel\, and was the head of Friends World College\, an international university programme in the States. He has been a tireless advocate for justice and civil rights for all Israelis and Palestinians. He spent ten years as a community worker in Jerusalem aiding low-income Mizrahi families. He co-founded ICAHD in 1997 to help resist Israel’s strategy of house demolitions in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. He is the author of four books\, Between Redemption and Revival: The Jewish Yishuv in Jerusalem in the Nineteenth Century\, An Israeli in Palestine: Resisting Possession\, Redeeming Israel\, Obstacles to Peace: A Reframing of the Palestinian – Israeli Conflict and War Against the People: Israel\, the Palestinians and Global Pacification. In 2006 Dr. Halper was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize\, citing ICAHD’s work “to liberate both the Palestinian and the Israeli people from the yoke of structural violence” and “to build equality between their people by recognizing and celebrating their common humanity.” Jeff is co-founder of the One Democratic State Campaign.

The uptake of these ‘modern’ approaches will impact the roles that design professionals play in the construction sector – what will the future be for professional identities in delivering projects using offsite manufacturing and digital technologies?The presentation will highlight the potential implications that developments around OSM and digital technology applications hold for construction design professionals. This will be followed by an interactive discussion about the relevant capabilities that construction professionals/firms could consider exploring in order to remain relevant and competitive in a digitally enabled and OSM-driven environment for project delivery. \nSPEAKER \nDr Kwadwo Oti-Sarpong  BSc PhD  \nResearch Associate | University of Cambridge \nDr Kwadwo Oti-Sarpong is a Research Associate at the Cambridge Centre for Housing and Planning Research\, Department of Land Economy\, University of Cambridge. He is part of a team investigating the non-technical inhibitors to an industry-wide uptake of digital technologies in the construction industry. His research seeks to understand why digital approaches have not yet become mainstream despite their widely acknowledged benefits\, and to make suggestions as to how industry-wide changes can be made. Additionally\, the research explores how emerging digital technologies can be integrated with off-site manufacturing (OSM) to increase the potential for widespread uptake in the UK construction industry. \nInspired by his interest in construction technology and its application in project settings\, Kwadwo studied for a PhD in the Department of Real Estate and Construction\, University of Hong Kong (HKU). He used the social construction of technology (SCOT) approach to explore the complex interactions embedded in a project-based technology adoption processes in a new environment.  \nHe previously worked as a Post-Doctoral Researcher at Hong Kong University where he investigated how small and medium construction firms were responding to a government mandate for compulsory building information modelling (BIM) use on all public works projects. DESCRIPTION:Book Launch for: ‘Between Impunity And Imperialism: The Regulation Of Transnational Bribery’ by Kevin E. Davis\n\n\n\nTickets will be released from 09.00 on Friday 3 April. \nWhen people pay bribes to foreign public officials\, how should the law respond? This question has been debated ever since the enactment of the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act of 1977\, and some of the key arguments can be traced back to Cicero in the last years of the Roman Republic and Edmund Burke in late eighteenth-century England.  \nIn recent years\, the U.S. and other members of the OECD have joined forces to make anti-bribery law one of the most prominent sources of liability for firms and individuals who operate across borders. The modern regime is premised on the idea that transnational bribery is a serious problem which invariably merits a vigorous legal response. The shape of that response can be summed up in the phrase “every little bit helps\,” which in practice means that: prohibitions on bribery should capture a broad range of conduct; enforcement should target as broad a range of actors as possible; sanctions should be as stiff as possible; and as many agencies as possible should be involved in the enforcement process. An important challenge to the OECD paradigm\, labelled here the “anti-imperialist critique\,” accepts that transnational bribery is a serious problem but questions the conventional responses.  \nThis book uses a series of high-profile cases to illustrate key elements of transnational bribery law in action\, and analyzes the law through the lenses of both the OECD paradigm and the anti-imperialist critique. It ultimately defends a distinctively inclusive and experimentalist approach to transnational bribery law. \n \nAbout the Speakers \nKevin E. Davis is Vice Dean and Beller Family Professor of Business Law at New York University School of Law. His current research focuses on contract law\, anti-corruption law\, and the general relationship between law and economic development. Before entering academia\, Professor Davis served as Law Clerk to Justice John Sopinka of the Supreme Court of Canada and was an associate in the Toronto office of Torys\, a Canadian law firm. From 1996-2004 he was an assistant and then an associate professor at the University of Toronto. He also has held visiting positions at the University of Southern California\, Cambridge University’s Clare Hall\, the University of the West Indies (Cave Hill)\, Fundação Getúlio Vargas\, São Paulo and the University of Toronto.   \nJeremy Horder is Professor of Criminal Law at The London School of Economics. His research interests include history\, philosophy and politics of English criminal law\, and criminal law reform\, more particularly\, homicide\, bribery and corruption\, and the intersection of criminal law and other forms of sanction. Professor Horder was a Research Fellow at Jesus College\, Oxford\, from 1987-1989\, and the Porjes Trust Tutorial Fellow in Law at Worcester College\, Oxford\, from 1989-2010. He was Chairman of Oxford’s Faculty of Law from 1998-2000. From 2005-2010\, he was a Law Commissioner for England and Wales\, with responsibility for criminal law reform\, before becoming Edmund Davies Professor of Criminal Law at King’s College London\, from 2010-2013. He is an Honorary Bencher of the Middle Temple and holds an Honorary LL.D from the University of Hull. \nJames Mather is a barrister at Serle Court. He won ‘Insolvency Junior of the Year’ at the Legal 500 Bar Awards 2018.  His areas of expertise include insolvency\, partnership and shareholder disputes; commercial fraud and asset recovery; and domestic and offshore trusts matters. Recent significant cases include two sets of proceedings arising out of the corrupt sale of Formula One; the leading Court of Appeal authorities on\, respectively\, the law of privilege in personal insolvency and the threshold test for obtaining security for costs; and a Privy Council decision on a novel point of BVI company law and a Commercial Court decision on the scope of the court’s power to grant urgent injunctive relief in support of arbitration proceedings. \nAlun Milford is a highly experienced criminal lawyer. He specialises in serious or complex financial crime\, proceeds of crime litigation and corporate investigations. He has particular knowledge and experience of issues surrounding corporate crime and deferred prosecution agreements. He joined Kingsley Napley from the public sector where\, over a twenty-six year career as a government lawyer and public prosecutor\, he worked in a wide variety of roles including General Counsel at the Serious Fraud Office\, the Crown Prosecution Services’ Head of Organised Crime\, its Head of Proceeds of Crime and Revenue and Customs Prosecutions Office’s Head of Asset Forfeiture Division. He also worked as a prosecutor in central London and a lawyer in the Attorney General’s Office. \n \nAbout the Chair \nPrabha Kotiswaran is Professor of Law & Social Justice at King’s College London. Her main areas of research include criminal law\, transnational criminal law\, sociology of law\, postcolonial theory and feminist legal theory.
