SUMMARY:Profitable Practice Growth Secrets: How To Attract More Of Your Ideal Clients And Significantly Increase Your Profits Without Working More Hours
DESCRIPTION:If you are the owner of a solo or small law firm or other professional practice and you want to: \n1. Attract clients rather than go out hunting for them \n2. Have a never-ending waiting list of your ideal clients who understand the value of your services and are happy to pay your fees without quibbling \n3. Get off the ‘feast or famine’ rollercoaster by attracting a consistent stream of new instructions whilst you get on with delivering your service to existing clients \n4. Build a highly profitable practice without adding more hours to your working day \nThis will be the most important event you attend this year. \n  \nDuring this powerful one workshop\, you’ll learn… \n1. The 3 Essential Elements of a Profitable Practice and how to put them to work so they do the heavy lifting of growing your practice (and you don’t have to work harder) \n2. The 9 Accelerators in the Profitable Practice Model which you can install into your firm or practice – right now – to speed up your results without adding to your working hours \n3. Specific Tools and Strategies you can implement into your practice immediately to attract more enquiries from your ideal clients and covert more enquiries into paying clients at the fees you want to charge \n4. The Secret Formula for Profitable Growth that means you double your profits without needing to double your clients \n  \nThis workshop is for senior partners\, managing partners\, and the owners of small legal or other professional practices  \n  \nMost business seminars are boring\, mostly theory\, and you don’t come away with anything actionable. SUMMARY:Book Launch: Shaping Environmental Modern Law
DESCRIPTION:UCL Centre for Law and Environment is launching Professor Richard Macrory’s new book Irresolute Clay: Shaping the Foundations of Modern Law\n\n\n\nWith the huge uncertainties around reopening of normal business with the coronavirus\, we feel that it is prudent to postpone the Book Launch “Shaping Environmental Modern Law” with Professor Richard Macrory and Lord Carnwath on Tuesday 23 June. \nWe will reschedule this event\, hopefully for the autumn 2020\, when we will have a better understanding of the effects of government guidance (when it comes!) on public events. \n—- \nUCL Centre for the Law and Envronment is pleased to host the launch of Professor Richard Macrory’s new book Irresolute Clay: Shaping the Foundations of Modern Law. \nThis free event will take the form of a conversation with Richard and Lord Carnwath about issues raised in the book to be followed by an informal reception. \nCopies of the book will be available for those attending for purchase at £20 (a 20% discount \nAbout the Book\nAt a time of profound change and rethinking\, this book provides insights into how environmental law in the UK has developed into its current form\, and considers challenges it will face in the future. Irresolute Clay is not a legal history or texbook\, nor a conventional set of legal memoirs. Instead it offers a personal account of the inside stories as experienced by one of the key architects of contemporary environmental law. Taking a thematic appraoch\, it charts fundamental tenets of the subject (such as environmental sanctions\, the European dimension\, developing the academic discipline of environmental law\, and environmental courts and tribunals)\, from the beginnings of the modern environmental law era in the 1970s to the present day. \nSupported by Harts Law Books and UK Environmental Law Association \nAbout the Speakers\nProfessor Richard Macrory joined the Faculty in 1999. He had previously been teaching at Imperial College London\, and was Director of the Environmental Change Institute\, Oxford University. Richard Macrory was a Member of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution between 1992 and 2003\, and was a Board Member of the Environment Agency in England and Wales between 1999 and 2004. He was the founding editor in chief of the Journal of Environmental Law (Oxford University Press) and is currently legal correspondent to ENDS Report. He was Hon. President of the National Society for Clean Air 2005-6\, and chairman of Merchant Ivory Film Productions between 1988 and 2004. In 2001-2003 he was elected chairman of the Steering Group of the European Environmental Advisory Councils\, an informal network of official environmental advisory bodies throughout Europe. Professor Macrory is a Patron of the UK Environmental Law Association. \nLord Carnwath of Notting Hill became a Justice of The Supreme Court in April 2012. After studying law at Trinity College\, Cambridge\, Lord Carnwath was called to the Bar (Middle Temple) in 1968 and took silk in 1985. He served as Attorney General to the Prince of Wales from 1988 to 1994. He was a judge of the Chancery Division from 1994 to 2002\, during which time (1999 to 2002) he was also Chairman of the Law Commission. Lord Carnwath was appointed to the Court of Appeal in 2002. Between 2007 and 2012 he was Senior President of Tribunals and led the planning and implementation of the reforms of the tribunal system following the Leggatt report.

SUMMARY:LEGAL KICK-START: GETTING THE FOUNDATIONS RIGHT
DESCRIPTION:LEGAL KICK-START: GETTING THE FOUNDATIONS RIGHT \nLegal requirements can seem daunting when you make that decision to start-up. This is true for many\, but\, the fact is to operate legally and to protect your business interests\, they can’t be avoided. \nThe good news is\, “the legals” are far easier to manage if you understand your obligations sooner rather than later. \nIf you take the time to understand the basics at the outset\, it’s really not as scary as it seems and you can make informed decisions on what the right approach is for you and your business. \nLed by legal specialists from Shulmans LLP (a UK top 200 corporate law firm)\, this free half-day seminar\, where lunch will also be provided\, will give you an overview of the legal topics that really matter in your start-up journey. \nWe’ll usually cover topics such as \nCONTRACT FORMATION – WINNING THE BATTLE OF THE FORMS! EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW \nContracts form the bedrock of the business world. Avoid the potential for unwanted legal landslides by understanding how enforceable contracts are formed\, and how to manage them throughout their lifetime. \nEMPLOYMENT – LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR GROWTH BUSINESSES \nTaking on your first members of staff is a major commitment. This step on your business’ journey can be daunting and it has even been known to make or break a start-up. We’ll talk you through some of the key terms of employment and ways to navigate the hazards that catch many new employers out. \nDATA PROTECTION – UNDERSTANDING YOUR LEGAL OBLIGATIONS \nMuch has been published in recent times about changes to data protection law – some useful\, and some downright nonsense. \nAs a start-up or scale-up business\, you will be developing your databases\, considering your marketing approach and creating new business and customer relationships\, all of which are likely to involve you handling personal data. Whatever your size\, this session will help you understand your data protection responsibilities and will also explain how to approach producing the key documentation that your business requires. It will also provide an overview of how to handle issues like subject access requests and personal data breaches. \nINTELLECTUAL PROPERTY – PROTECTING YOUR IDEAS AND THEIR VALUE \nIt’s essential to protect your Intellectual Property\, and a common mistake for start-ups is to create ideas without understanding how to protect them. We’ll explain the different types of IP\, how it arises and what you can do to protect it. \nThis event is delivered by Shulmans LLP and is part of the AD:VENTURE Business Support Programme. \nThe AD:VENTURE programme delivers ERDF funded growth support to existing businesses in their first 3 years of trading and for people planning to start a business within the Leeds City Region. \nThe AD:VENTURE programme is supported by the 2014 – 2020 European Regional Development Fund.

SUMMARY:PAST Records Workshop: Medieval and Early Modern Legal Records
DESCRIPTION:The Postgraduate Archival Skills Training (PAST) programme offers students a unique opportunity to obtain the skills and knowledge needed to undertake academic research using original records at The National Archives. \nThis Medieval and Early Modern Legal Records workshop will provide you with the essential skills to identify and access original source material amongst the legal records of central government. During each session you will receive tuition and guidance on a range of archival research skills from our medieval records specialists\, and you will also undertake practical exercises involving hands-on document work.  \nThe first day of the workshop will focus on the vast collection of medieval legal records held by The National Archives (c.1215-c.1509). The day will begin with an introduction to the English legal system in the Middle Ages and beyond and its processes\, including an introduction to the languages and skills needed to navigate legal records\, as well as an overview of officials active in the courts. The following sessions will focus on different areas of medieval law including: common law (King’s Bench and the court of Common Pleas); the rise of equity courts; and the local administration of justice. These sessions will include practical activities designed to guide students in locating and using original cases within TNA’s collections\, as well as using material from lesser-used document series to supplement findings and provide dates for undated Chancery petitions. \nThe second day of the workshop will trace the changes in the legal systems and records held by The National Archives from the early modern period (c.1509-c.1782). The day will begin with an introduction to the early modern legal system\, providing a summary of the material covered on day one\, as well as covering the key changes taking place in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The following sessions will focus on the different types of court available to litigants during this period\, from the common law courts of Westminster\, to courts and commissions held outside of London\, as well as the conciliar courts of Star Chamber\, Requests\, and Chancery. In the final session of the day\, our records specialists will demonstrate how to trace a single case across several record series using the skills introduced over the day. \nAt the end of the workshop you will have increased confidence in your ability to find and access previously challenging medieval and early modern legal documents\, and to read and understand their contents. This event is aimed at current taught postgraduate and PhD students\, although other researchers are welcome to attend. This is a level three workshop within the PAST programme\, and will be investigating complex and demanding archival collections\, but you will be supported by expert staff throughout. There are no pre-requisites for attendance\, although a basic understanding of Latin is recommended. \nThis is a two-day workshop on site at The National Archives. Tea and coffee at registration and lunch are provided. While we recommend that students attend both days of this workshop\, there is also the option to attend only one day. Please ensure you select the relevant ticket option when booking. \nFor more information about the PAST programme please see The National Archives’ website or email past@nationalarchives.gov.uk. \n#TNAPAST\nProgramme\nTuesday 16 June 2020 Day One (Medieval)\n09.30-10:00 Registration and Coffee\n\nTea\, coffee & pastries in the public restaurant area\n You may also use this time to register for a Reader’s Ticket if you wish to order documents to view after day one.
